SURFconext is the service for federated identity management for higher education and research in the Netherlands.  It handles authentication of users and exchange of group information on a central level in the Netherlands

By connecting your service to SURFconext once, students, faculty, and staff of all universities and research institutes in the Netherlands can easily be given access using the account of their home institution.  There is no more need to store passwords locally in your service.

Furthermore, SURFconext facilitates exchange of group information to all connected services.  Pre-defined groups (such as a student team working on a specific course) or ad-hoc collaborations (e.g., a number of researches working together on a paper) are defined in a central system, from which services can fetch them to facilitate collaboration for these groups.
