SURFconext is the identity federation service (formerly known as SURFfederatie) for higher education and research in The Netherlands. It offers universities and research institutions a generic way to handle authentication and authorization requests between identity providers (your institution) and service providers (e.g. google apps, edugroepen or any other application linked to SURFconext). In addition, SURFconext facilitates centralized group management and lightweight integration of applications. The picture at the right shows the SURFconext hub and spoke setup.

The sections below provide the steps to take to become a member of the SURFconext federation.

Conditions and Agreements

An Identity Provider should be a member of SURFnet. Would you like to know if your institution is already connected? View the list of connected Identity Providers here. To be become an Identity Provider within the SURFconext trust framework, a contract needs to be signed. A description of the SURFconext trust framework is available here.

Technical connection

An institution should have a system that supports the exchange of information about users and their attributes. Generally this will be realized by an interface which is connected to the central identity management system. Identity providers which are already connected to the SURFfederatie can easily connect to SURFconext. Non-SURFfederatie Identity Providers should contact the SURFconext team. Identity Providers can also make their group information available within SURFconext.

Start using Services

After an Identity Providers gives permission to make a service available for its users, the SURFconext team will switch this particular service on. Please contact the SURFconext team for more information.
