Permanently removing data

If you want to permanently remove a file or folder from Research Drive, you should remove the it from the trashbin.

To do this, go to the trashbin (Deleted Files) and click on the 'three dots' behind the file or folder and click on "Delete".

Permanently removing data or data destruction may be needed when working with sensitive data or for DPIA (Data Protection Impact Assessments).

The following points are important to know when data is permanently removed from Research Drive:

When data is removed from trashbin:

  • it can not be restored any more
  • all the previous versions are also removed
  • the copy on SURF disaster recovery backup will be removed between 24 to 48 hours

When data is permanently remove from RD, synchronised files on other devices may not be removed, as long as the file is not chosen to be synchronised on the local device. SURF has no control or responsibility over the data that is being downloaded by users on local computers via sync-share clients.

Please make sure you follow the guidelines of your own organisation, local Data protection officer or Privacy Officer when using the sync-share clients (i.e. ownCloud client) for sensitive or personal data.
