What is a virtual IdP?

A vIdP is an Identity Provider provided by the OpenConext platform consisting of a group of users (as defined in OpenConext Teams+Grouper or at an External Group Provider) and/or a group of IdPs.

An example is in grid computing (see Wikipedia) where a vidP may be a group of researchers from different institutions who need access to a supercomputer or data from the CERN supercollider. Their institutions do not need to be part of a common federation.

What is a Virtual Organization or a Collaborative Organization?

It is an organization running its own IdP, but being dependent on other institutions to deliver identity information for its users. Examples are research collaborations (e.g. CLARIN and ELIXER), where users from different universities collaborate. They offer (computing) facilities to its researchers, even though they log in using the identity and IdP of their home university.

For the CO SURFconext uses a virtual IdP in which individual users from multiple IdPs are combined. that is visible to the SP.
